Improving website visibility popularity

I have put together a website and tried loading it in search engines with slow progress. I want to get it ranked high and I read conflicting information of the best way to do this. Anybody know of a good book or a cheap consulting service for this or someone who could help me with this. My site should be able to generate income and is poker related but at this point I can't afford the high monthly cost of a proffesional service. Any advice is apreciated

There's no easy way of doing it. It either takes a lot of your time or a lot of someone else's.

Check out sitepoint.com, namepros.com, and http://forums.digitalpoint.com. These guys all know what they're doing and you should be able to find out decent information on their forums.
