Re: Question about straddling?
Reasons to straddle:
1. To buy last action before the flop 2. To juice up a tight game 3. To give yourself a loose image 4. To pointlessly jack it up 5. Because it will tilt some Tighty-McWhitey jerk and he will play much worse againt you afterwords 6. Because it's fun 7. Because you're following Capone's first rule of straddles: four beers and I start straddlin' If some moron starts spouting off about a straddle being "the worst bet in poker," you send them to me and I'll kick them in the nuts. Re: Question about straddling?
The Mississipi straddle can be fun too.
This allows anyone in any position on the table to straddle by doubling the last bet (be it the BB or the previous straddle). They get to act last on the preflop betting round - but then position reverts to normal. So effectively the cut off can act last preflop, or UTG etc etc. This allows drunk people to get into a war of "my penis is bigger" where ive seen a £2 blind turn into a £32 straddle a few times. Apparently our casino's record is the £2 being turned into £128 blind straddle. |

Re: Question about straddling?

[ QUOTE ] what do you mean giving him compensation? At my table everyone just called everytime. He almost never got raised before the flop. Is that what you mean? [/ QUOTE ] by compensation he means action I believe a "good" straddler should raise some of his straddles, moreso if everyone is just calling it each time you should have also tried to pick on the straddle spot if he was playing it weak, sounds like some free money to pick up [/ QUOTE ] I agree (and this was also how I was taught on how to do a straddle as well), as in addition to building a bigger pot, the straddler also gets the right for last action (in effect stealing that right from the big blind) preflop. I was always taught there is no sense in doing a live straddle, if you're not going to raise it, regardless of what two cards you have in your hand. |
