Ackbleh, if you are managing your bankroll properly, you should not need to sacrifice EV for low variance, or am I missing something?

You're not necessarily sacrificing EV by playing lowball. If you're limited by the number of hands you can play (or time), and you can play as many tournaments as you wish for that number of hands, then obviously you should push every +chipEV edge to the limit. There's always the next tournament waiting for you.

However, if you're limited by the number of tournaments (like here, where you got a huge fish, and once you're done you're not going to play with him again), then you maximize your EV by maximizing your chance to win the particular tournament. By playing lowball, you're not maximizing your chipEV on any one hand, but you're playing many more hands. All those smaller edges per hand add up to a much bigger amount per tourney than in the first case.

You are if your opponent is a hypperaggressive. Hypperaggressives don't allow you to play small ball.

That's true, I was speaking theoretically, back to that disputed theoretic scenario as to whether you want to put 1500 chips on the line on one hand with an edge, or just put 100 on a series of hands.
