I bet and then make a potentially bad call if he raises.

Why on earth would you call a river raise?

To see what I'm getting raised with, if he'll slowplay till the river, what is his river raise range, etc. It's not because I think I have the best hand.

This isn't so good. You'll get something pretty useless:

"Raised rivered set: 99 on A23Q9 board. Checked behind on flop and called a turn bet."

or

"Raised rivered two pair: Q9 on A23Q9 board."

Actually, the second one is a little bit more likely than the first.

OP's initial read because it's good enough to make the fold:

"they all seemed very passive especially the main villain."

I would not put him on Ax based on him checking the flop from the button. He is most likely on a draw IMO. I am 50/50 on betting the river or checking to possible induce a bluff.

Okay, to close this out, I bet the river (and would probably folded to a raise from such a passive player). He called and showed A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. I didn't want to be results oriented so I posted the hand to make sure I did the right thing by betting out.

Checking to induce a bluff is bad in this spot.
