Default $5NL noob turns the nuts and doesn\'t know what to do

This was only about the third hand I'd seen at this table, so no reads.

Not sure I played this awfully well. Didn't want to blow SB out of the hand on the turn, then I went all weak when the board paired on the river.

What should I have done differently?

First hand I've posted, so please beat up on me. That way I learn better.

Thanks.

Yuck. Preflop if you're going to raise, make it a real raise. Go between .12 and .16. As played, I would just muck the flop. Sure you have 4 nut outs, and potentially more outs, but something like Q9, J9, etc has you in bad shape if you make a pair but it's not good. Also, there is a guy behind you still, and he may raise. I would raise more on the turn. His bet puts .64 in the pot. Make it like .50. I'm not sure how much time people at these stakes spend on hand-reading, but your hand sure as hell won't look like the nut straight. I would just call the river. Hands like 9t and 98 are pretty popular. He could just be value-betting with trips, or he could be bluffing. If he's bluffing, he won't call anyway, and he may not call a raise with trips.

Thanks, flytrap.
That all makes a lot of sense.
Much appreciated.

I agree with flytrap. A raise to .16 or .20 would be my choice, and it would be an attempt to steal. I would prefer to fold JQo even from that position unless there were many limpers, in which case I'd probably wouldn't raise.

You must raise that river. Villain played a strange line, with the minbet on turn and the small bet on the river. But this is NL 5, and you shouldn't bother too much about minbets. It could be a try to seem weak while being strong, it could be a blocking bet to keep you from betting a lot, or it could even just be a very noobish way of extracting some value from you. Sometimes such small bets/raises are very easy reads on weak players in these limits, but if you can't read it, just ignore it.

Villain played like he had at least something, most likely a pair or a set. He never showed much strength, so why should you ever think you're beaten?

Most players on NL5 don't bother too much about reading your hand, and even if he did, you can't think you have such a strong hand. Plus, bad players like to call river-bets if they have something.

I'd raise to about 0.70. He far more often calls your raise with a pair or a set, then he beats you.

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate your advice and the time spent giving it.

It makes a lot of sense.

I’m weak tight, basically. Always fear the worst rather than taking a balanced view of a range of possibilities and pushing an edge when I’ve got one. Something I definitely need to work on if I’m going to make a successful transition from Limit to No Limit.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

DONT MINRAISE EVER!! i like .14 or .16
fold flop most of the time,, occasionally i would float but not at this level
turn is good maybe raise a little more
river id raise to 1.5 because i think he 3 bets turn with a set and you lose value by not raising. I think the only reasonable hand that could beat you here is 9T
