They think that he may step it up the next few starts and they can flip him (since he'll clear waivers probably). If not take him next year and deal him at the deadline for something a little better than Rajai Davis? I think its a pretty high possibility, obviously its a dumb move period but when you stick Sabean and Littlefield together this seems perfectly normal.

Well, Matt Morris used to have great stuff, and now he "gets by" via being crafty and throwing lots of breaking pitches. Considering the Pirates have something like 7 straight first round pitchers who have had arm surgery, maybe they want him to teach their young guys how to a) avoid such injuries, b) have a career post-stufflessness.

hey, this needed a creative answer right?

Seriously though, young pitchers probably benefit from having a veteran around. I honestly believe it's a big reason why the Braves keep holding onto Julio Franco. The dude has insane workout habits and a ridiculous work ethic. If any of that can rub off on Frenchy, McCann, Kelly Johnson, etc. it will really pay off. I don't know if Morris has the rep of being someone to emulate as far as that goes, but if he does it might actually instill some long-term benefit in Gorz, Snell, Maholm etc.

Much like I have a special place in my heart for anyone in the '87 Topps collection, Littlefield loves anyone that had a decent year in 2001. Hoping we can score Russ Ortiz and Tim Salmon next year and really get this team turned around.
