Re: What range of hands to defend BB with against a UTG raise?
I defend with a lot of those marginal hands (small pairs and suited aces and suited connectors) unless I think the guy is a good TAG as opposed to a "I know what hands to play preflop but suck postflop" TAG.

Re: What range of hands to defend BB with against a UTG raise?
[ QUOTE ]
I wanted to focus here on preflop in this topic (and yes, I understand postflop and preflop are related). But if he is a somewhat decent tag he is going to c-bet 100% of the time and 3-bet and calls (and raises the turn) with both worse and better hands. [/ QUOTE ] I guess what I wanted to get at is that if I've been at the table long enough to know he's a decent TAG, I should have some idea on how he plays postflop, which is going to cause me to widen my range against him since I have a handle on his play. The exception would be if he's quite tricky and I'm just going to end up spewing against him often or folding the best hand quite a bit. I suppose my default TAG defending range is something in the neighborhood of 22+, ATs+, AJ+, 76s+, some suited one gappers, but that's pretty flexible. |

Not really, but I think my defense ranges can be tweaked and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

Re: What range of hands to defend BB with against a UTG raise?
yea, i agree, me too
the main thing i look for is stats/read on the pfr guy...if he is super nitty mcnit i can fold a lot, even bad aces, and be more likely to play other kinds of hands... if the guy is loose/overstealy i can way open up my 3b range and so on |

Re: What range of hands to defend BB with against a UTG raise?
in general I play any suited ace, pairs, and a lot of suited and connected hands ... mostly - anything that is out of this guy's range
and depending on how this fellow plays post flop - I try to steal depending on the flop |

Re: What range of hands to defend BB with against a UTG raise?
35% is ONLY a rule of thumb and most applicable to steal ranges where domination is less of a concern.
using 35% equity against tight ranges is a loser, you definitely need to be tighter than this because of exactly what you said - domination and the reverse implied odds that result. |

if i have something i like, i call and play poker postflop [/ QUOTE ] My favorite quote of all time. LDO TYLER! WE ARN'T GUNNA CHANGE TO TIDDLY-WINKS POST FLOP, ARE WE?! [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] But yes, this is what I do. I play "decent" hands. Adjusted by: - how tight the raiser is - if anyone cold-called Plus some other things like if he looks like he might be tilty, if I know/think he is positionally aware, what his wtsd is, history with the player, etc. |

Re: What range of hands to defend BB with against a UTG raise?
I just skimmed the thread, but there is no way 22 is profitable against a decent UTG open-raise. (you really can't play it for set value, and have serious RIO problems if you play it as a pair). I would say the worst I would go in a tough fullring game is something like 77+, AJs+, AQo HU. It's not "defending" if he's not stealing.
