I don't think I understand this. Are you saying because "pure" free speech is unattainable, that it's therefore not a worthy goal?

Having something as an ideal is fine, but something can't be properly called a goal that is unattainable.

How about having as a goal, say, limiting restrictions on free speech to those that are absolutely necessary for society to continue to function?

Of course, I don't know that I would agree that any such restrictions are absolutely necessary, but I'm willing to discuss it...

That's pretty much what we have already. I'd include things that would potentially wipe out the human race entirely as those that would imperil its ability to function.
