I used to work in Woodland Hills, and I lived in Van Nuys. It wasn't the greatest of all areas, but it certainly wasn't ghetto, and the prices were very affordable. I lived on Sherman Way & Kester, FWIW.

try something along or close to the water as thats where the toxic smog is the least by a large amount. and the so called nicer people live if they can afford it. manhattan beach or sanra monica is great and can get to freeways for casinos.

Generally, what makes me happy is to be able to walk down the street to the bar and the grocery store, with interesting, outgoing people kicking around for odd conversations and cold beers. HELP ME OOT!

take a look at the neighborhood where i used to live. i think you'll like it. check out the area between beachwood and bronson on the north side of franklin ave at the edge of hollywood/los feliz. @ franklin & bronson is the following:

grocery store (mayfair market)
deli & wine shop (victor's = awesome)
french restaurant/bar (la poubelle, good times)
bookstore/newsstand
record store
coffee shop
restaurant / sports bar (birds)
italian restaurant / wine bar (prizzi's)
stage theater
boutique clothing shop

massive scientology celebrity centre across the street has 24 security patrolling on bikes = neighborhood is very safe (+ nutsy scientology students will go on "missions" in the neighborhood every now and then where they ask random people (you) questions like "what's the first thing you notice about me?" which provides a fair bit of entertainment value lol.)

the neighborhood has a close knit / artistic kind of vibe to it. you get a good balance of people from the neighborhood mixed with people from all over the city coming to the bars & restaurants. and it's all within easy walking distance, plus everything in hollywood is within a few miles without having to get on any freeways. i loved it when i was there, and i will probably move back someday.

edit: lol just actually read your post and saw that you're going to be working in woodland hills. honestly, you need to find a different job. otherwise, bottom line is you're going to have to either deal with a hellish commute every day or live in the valley which blowwwwwwwws. you're not going to find any interesting neighborhoods anywhere near woodland hills.

Nice post! Thanks for all the info.

Am I still good to live on the city side -- what do I call that by the way, if the valley is "the valley?" -- if the job is in North Hollywood?

The new office's location is still far from decided; I just know that the guy who lives in Woodland Hills wants the office to be in Woodland Hills .

Okay another question... I'm thinking about getting a Brompton and living relatively near a metro station. Ideally, this means it doesn't matter where I live and where I work. Is this purely ideal or can it be real too?

Burbank might be OK for you... you can skirt a lot of the traffic in the morning getting to woodland hill sby taking the 5 north.

To get to NO and the rest of the valley there are several main ateries like Burbank BLVD that shoot from the Hills out to the Valley.

Burbank isn't party town... but it has all the essentials.

there's not really a name for the other side of the hills. you just refer to each area by it's name i.e., hollywood, los feliz, west hollywood, downtown, etc. but all the areas/cities in the valley get lumped into "the valley", which is a good way to represent the fact that the entire area sucks ass.

the commute from los feliz to north hollywood would be better than to woodland hills. but it would still suck. from where i lived to north hollywood is only like 7 miles or so, but with traffic it could be 45 min to an hour each way. and where i was at is basically as close as you can be to the valley if you want to live in hollywood/los feliz. if you lived further from the 101 (say like melrose area) or further down the 101 (silverlake/downtown), the commute would just be unbearable imo, even to north hollywood.

if you can locate the office VERY close to a metro rail line station, it's possible you could commute that way instead of driving. but you still would be looking at a lot of time getting to and from work if you're living in hollywood and working in the valley. metro in LA basically sucks and is not a fast or efficient way of getting from point A to point B.

N. Hollywood is decent. My uncle has lived there for years off of Lankersheim. Have friends who live in the Valley off of Ventura near the Bucca de Beppa (not sure the exact city as drove to there and away from there) and there area is really nice. Another friend lives in Pasadena and teaches in San Marino. Pasadena is nice. Obv, when you make your millions at the Bike/Commerce buy a fixer upper in San Marino.

if you like Bucca de Beppa, Olive Garden, etc, then by all means you might like to live in the Valley.
