A friend who used to live there said that the local girls are not easy to come by and are mostly Cali gold diggers. Is this true or just something he percieved incorrectly?

[ QUOTE ]
i ran into a bar owner I sorta-knew from Suffolk County NY. He is 40 now, sold his bar and moved to Vegas to become a cop. Why? Vegas cops are some of the best paying positions in the nation he told me. Wow... when i was a kid the best paid cops were in Suffolk County NY, things sure have changed! [/ QUOTE ] If they're not the best paid, then suffolk and nassau cops are surely near the top. The waiting lists are ridiculously large though because every NYPD cop wants to come out here/ |

My dad told me new teachers get free homes, any truth to that? [/ QUOTE ] I think there is little truth to that. Least ways, I recall hearing nothing that good. They do have some sorta programs in place to try to help teachers get mortgages, but I don't believe anybody is just handing out houses as part of your employment contract. I know a couple poker-playing teachers though I haven't seen either in a few weeks. I'll ask if I run into either. No single income new teacher is gonna be able to afford a real house here. $35K/yr just doesn't go as far as it used to when entry-level homes are $250K. |

Why not try and get some casino experience while you are still in AC? All the rooms are still growing and I can attest that all the dealers in the "underground" clubs I play in in NYC & Long island are far better than any of the Tropicana or Hilton Dealers. i haven't had many bad experiences with dealers at the Taj or Borgata but i have heard a few complaints. Alot of the guys who you will meet interviewing for work in A.C. are solid Philly guys and alot of them have connections out West so if you make a good impression they might be able to help you out when you get out there. I'm going to Los Angeles in a few days and plan on spending a few weeks in Vegas while im out West. I'm luck because I have an I.A.T.S.E. (stage hand) union card in NY and I can transfer out there, earn the same salary with better benefits and a much cheaper cost of living so if I hit a rough patch on the felt I can get union work at will, according to the business agent I spoke to out there. Gl with your move kid hopefully I see you out there

If people keep moving out there in droves, you'll need to bring a personal supply of water

There's something that needs to be added here. If you want to deal in Vegas, learn to deal all the big games, and probably most of the small ones. I'd start with the unholy trinity (BJ, Craps, and Roulette) and go from there. I'd concentrate especially on Craps, as it's considered the hardest (all the wacky odds payouts to remember calculate on the fly).
Don't rely only on Poker. I'm starting to get the feeling that the poker boom has topped, and is coming down the other side. Also, the other games are really stock in trade for the casinos. Poker is seen more as a promotional thing. It turns a comparatively small, if safe and steady, profit for the house. But it's the house banked table games and machines that bring in the real money. Finally, I think now would be a great time to break in and take your lumps. Starting this year, and going for the next several, an raft of new, huge casinos will be opening (Palazzo, Wynn Encore, Citycenter, Cosmopolitan, Fontenbleu, Eschelon, etc.). Each one will be staffing up from scratch, and needing hundred of dealers, for all of the games. If you can get through dealer school, and six months to a year at a break in house, you'd be prime to either get into one of the new casinos, or backfill a spot at one of the older ones who's had experienced dealer pilfered by the new houses. |

Out of interest, how much do dealers earn? Seems like a pretty good gig to me, watching the tips we all give them. I think I could make a pretty good job of it myself.
