Default Re: Ask TheMetetron about living in or visiting Buenos Aires, Argentin

What's Buenos Aires like in late November/December, in terms of social/night life?

I know alot of the locals take vacation in the latter part of december, and that some of the places are closed/empty.

I'm planning at trip to BA in beginning of December, for my 29th bday, and I just want to make sure that I don't find it deserted, with all the locals gone to the coast and whatnot.

Thanks in advance for any info.

BA is NEVER empty or deserted. True many go to Mar del Plata for a vacation in December, but that still leaves around 12 million or so.

Nov/Dec are fine months to come in terms of night life.

dont want to try and hijack this thread or anything, just wanted to say anyone interested in going to live in BA for 6months, i am planning on going to live there for at least 6mnths early (Jan-Feb) next year. already have one poker friend in on it. looking to find two or three more ppl to come over and set ourselves up in a nice place/s and live it up for a while.

we are early 20's from australia and both online poker players. looking for social, easygoing, non-crazy ppl to hang with. preferably decent msnl players who would be able to contribute to poker discussions. also, being cool with going out to clubs and socializing w the local ladies is a plus as we plan on doing plenty of that no concrete plans yet but im keen to get the wheels in motion within the next month. PM me if interested.

Fantastic thread!

I am a 18 year-old boy who will study (on the internet) in Buenos Aires from August to June. I will also take the "Espaņol para extranjeros" course (2+2 hours x 17 weeks), which costs about $250.

Some questions for you Argentina-knowers on the forum:

1) Can you recommend a cheap hotel/hostel with WiFi? I haven't fixed an apartment, so I will chill down some days on a hotel and look for apartments.

2) Can you recommend a (mobile) telephone subscription for me? I won't call much and a cash card would be great.

3) Are there any age limits on the city's night clubs? Where do the young people go out to party? Is there any dress code, or is it enough with a shirt + jeans? What about shoes? Do they care?

4) Are there any low-limit poker games running? Something like 1/2, 2/4 or 3/6 would be great (or 50-100 tourneys). I'm talking about pesos.

5) Is it hard to get tickets to the Boca Juniors matches? I want to stand along with the fans as I love the team and also can the text of many of their songs. Where should I look for tickets like that? How can I see that my ticket is not fake if I buy from a street seller? And how much should I bribe the ticket collector with if my ticket is actually fake?

6) I love football (soccer) and I would like to play nearly every day. How are the fields down there? I've heard that there are lack of fields and that most of the playing grounds are kind of cages with 5v5 players. Can you give me a little information about this?

7) Are there any particular grocer's shops who are cheaper than others?

Didn't succeed updating my post. Here are two more questions:

8) What will it cost for a broadband router? I will probably live in a shared apartment with other students. Many of them has internet included in the price, but as I will study on the internet, I want connection in my room too.

9) Kolo/Spect: Do you have any blog we can read? What will you be doing in BsAs? Which kind of limits do you play? Im def up for a poker game when I arrive!

I will try to answer some of these as I just moved here and dealt with some similar things, and have also been here before:

1) I stayed at the Hostel Obelisco and liked it there. Very good wifi. A good place to search is at www.hostels.com

2) I brought my cell from the US and unlocked it. I would definitely recommend the same. Then buy a movistar (make sure it is movistar) sim card, it is between 15 and 20 pesos. Then buy a movistar card (will probably have to go elsewhere, locutorios, which are internet cafes, are the best place to go, they are 20 pesos and up). With these you receive calls and text's free. Calls out are like $.30 US per minute.

3) 18 and up. Dress code depends on the place I imagine, but think you should be fine with that. But I would wear shoes.

4) TheMeteron touches on this, just one casino, sometimes has a sit n go going..read the thread to find his post.

5) In 2003 we went to La Bombanera early in the week and bought tickets at the box office. I would not go to a street seller, you are just asking for it.

6) Don't know

7) There are 100s or 1000s of them, so that would be tough to say. And you are talking about saving not a lot of money as everything is cheap by US standards.

Hope that helps.
