I suspect you are right that we agree and are caught up in trivia. It is this "I wouldn't be surprised to see gains in LBM mostly from diet" that I still can't figure out what you meant.

Oh. Like people who eat trash and clean up their diets would likely see recomps in and of that.

You go from eating 3 times a day eating 1k cals of garbage. To 7 meals of 400-500 calories and you'll likely see a solid improvement in body composition without even adding weight training.

Note: Thats how the "gaining weight while at a caloric deficit" comment came about. Some people just eat ultra bad.
