Calling the flop bet is awful. Make a raise and go from there. If reraised, then you have a decision, but not protecting your hand is simply bad poker.

In limit not protecting your hand is bad poker but in no limit you have protect your stack in situations where you're vulnerable, and that sometimes means giving free or cheap cards away.
