Best Caribbean Island?
Need opinions on which Caribbean island would be best to visit for roughly a week towards the end of september. Looking to see which place has the best beaches, night life, etc.
I've been to the bahamas a few times, but I want to go somewhere different this time. Any info is greatly appreciated. |

Re: Best Caribbean Island?
I have been to the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel (if you want to count that). Grand Cayman is gorgeous and safe, but I'm not sure about the nightlife. The Dominican Republic is awesome--Puerta Plata is very friendly for tourists, has plenty of nightlife, and decent beaches. Jamaica (at least what I saw of it) is overrated, severely lacking on nightlife, and dirty.

Oh, and Cozumel/Cancún is alright. It's also the most popular and touristy and has good nightlife. But if you're looking for a nice vacation rather than a nice bender, I'd suggest either Grand Cayman or the DR.

St. Thomas was beautiful.
I've also heard that Turks and Caicos (sp?) is an up and coming destination. |

Re: Best Caribbean Island?
Sorry for the bump, saw this in the sticky and thought I'd add my two cents on an island.
I've spent two weeks in Barbados (two separate 1 week trips, one year apart) and loved it. Very low key, amazing restaurants with great seafood (I recommend Pisces and Josef's especially for fish), great bars if you are looking for nightlife, plenty of things to do. Safe, friendly people all over the place. Beautiful beaches. Pretty much a perfect island. I stayed in Christ Church, I've heard/seen that the West side is the ritzy part of the island. Christ Church was the south side. The east side is not touristy due to the rough Atlantic Ocean (not able to swim there due to currents that will pull you to Africa unless you are a surfer that knows what you're doing). Other than that, beautiful place to visit. |
