Default Stars $11 rebuy mid tournament AK decission

We're in the money with around 280 players left of a mega field.

I am the table chip leader after playing aggressively on the bubble and two hands ago re-stealing a hi ranked players LP steal - so my table image is def. aggressive.

I have no particular reads on villain - he is probably playing ABC poker.

UTG (35BB)
Hero (40BB)
Preflop: Hero is LP with Ace[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
UTG raises to 3 BB, 3 folds, Hero raises to 9 BB, 4 folds, UTG insta-pushes, ???

There's approximately 46 BB in the pot, and it will cost me 26 BB to call giving me 1.77 : 1 on my chips. Of course I'm crippled if I lose.

PokerStove gives me 38.8% equity or 28 BB for my 26 BB against a range of AK, AA - QQ.

???

Well, you are getting the necessary equity to make a call here correct. With your pot odds, you only need to have ~36% equity, and you have slightly more than that.

I also think you can put JJ in his range, which will inmprove your equity slightly, making this a slightly easier call.

his range is never that tight... and you're getting really good odds so call.
However, why dont you just call the raise PF with position against a big stack with a lot to win if you pair your hand? much better.. resteal against small stacks, try to break the big ones.

Because you can take down a nice pot preflop with that hand that will not improve on the majority of flops. AK is a powerhouse hand, and calling is wasting some of its POWER

I'm really not interested in seeing a flop with AK in a multi-way pot. Re-raising ensures me I'm HU ... or, if one of the blinds push and OR does as well, I can at least consider a fold.

The big stacks have much more to lose than the small ones, and will be much more likely to fold to a re-raise.

A small stack with 12 BB is probably not folding any pair 88 or better to a re-raise here.
