I'm looking at the homebuilders. They've come down considerably. The housing picture is bleak. I just need some more bad news (such as people losing homes on TV) and maybe an entry in October when the market is generally bottoming, and I'm in for the long haul. I may be a little premature, but I won't try too hard to pick a bottom.

I remember in 2002 when the techs dropped and JDSU was 95 cents. I didn't buy. Everyone said that the tech bubble would never re-inflate to previous levels. And they were right. But JDSU is now ~$16.

if you think housing has bottomed youre crazy, i dont remember the homemaker, but just today a major builder reported in their quarterly that the market is going to be terrible/unprofitable until LATE IN 2009

I don't want to buy when the market has already turned around. I don't think it has bottomed and will wait, but I have the homebuilders on my watch list. I said that I could premature, but only liars pick bottoms and tops. I remember when Bill Gross said that the DOW could go down to 5000 in 2002. A lot of people sat out for years and missed the beginning of the rebound. I know you didn't say this, but I don't think that housing stocks will go down through 2009.

JDSU had a 1:8 reverse stock split in Oct 2006 and has underperformed against the Nasdaq since 2002.

Still not convinced this is a bad investment at the current discount.

Ya, trading at a higher P/E than Google is a huge discount.
