The bottom line is that if tournaments didn't have a steep payout they'd be booooooring. Who wants to make the final table and not care about winning because the winner only gets a few bucks more than 4th?

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree it is much more exciting at a chance to win 7600 than 1400 -- certainly a negative.

Pah, variance is what makes it fun!

[/ QUOTE ]

I thought it was making money! I really think that only about 5% of all player's benefit from the top heavy payout structure. 95% of player's would benefit from a flatter payout. I have no evidence of this other than just browsing OTR and observing the very low percentage of player's that actually show a profit playing MTT's. I do know that player's such as aBOVebeLOW should not want a structure like this.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is the key. The top 5% of players (I really suspect more like top 10-15%) like the steep payout structure because it increases their EV long term. The bottom x% consider poker as all luck and would prefer that the tournament where "they finally got lucky" has a big payday. Those in the middle understand and hope they'll be in the top 10-15% some day.

people don't invest 4-5 hours in a MTT because of what 10th place pays..they are playing for first..well most of them anyways.

I really hate this idea...Sometimes I think the payouts should be steeper....

Also could you imagine how that tourney would play? There would be so little impetus to come first..Everyone would just try and make the money and then the top whatever are playing for like a hundred bucks or something....

One thing is for sure it would be way more boring to watch and to play...

If you desire a "low low" variance payout structure, grind sats. That's their place in the MTT world :P.

How about when you play great poker for 5 hours or so and are on the final table bubble. You raise with AA get pushed all in on in a pot that would give you the chip lead and ability to go deep onto the final table. You call of course and the guy flips over 77 -- sure enough he sucks out and sends you to the rail in 10th place for a really poor payday. That one beat cost you thousands of dollars in many tournaments.

In many ways I agree with you in that I hate the twenty percent payout structure, I think even ten percent is way to high. I would prefer last two, three or four tables making the money but it should be significant amounts for those tables. It seems that a cash anywhere in the medium buy-ins I play other than the final table is so inconsequential that I don't even care. I think it sucks that 220th place all the way to 10th place make [censored]. Narrow that down to decent money but the start the money at 27th place for 1400 player tourney (top 2%). I would be all for that.
