People that put salt on tomatoes and eat them like apples: going to hell.

[/ QUOTE ]

They have to be good tomatoes in order to eat them like apples, and if they're really good, you don't even need the salt. My grandmother used to have tomatoes in her garden and we used to pick them right off the vine and eat them. They were juicy and sweet and delicious, no salt needed.

[/ QUOTE ]

Celery salt is good. This perks up regular tomato juice a LOT, too. But just plain celery powder or celery seed is good too. Something magical about the combo in the way it brings out the flavor so well.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is key to a good BM.

This nice Mexican place near my house now brings a complimentary shot of some sort of seafood tomato juice crap that people seem to love but I think smells super vile.

A Mexican restaraunt by me serves their bloody mary's with two boiled shrimp, ala shrimp cocktail.

The bloody mary tasted like you would expect cocktail sauce to taste just zippier and colder.

I think a big part of the problem is that tomatoes have a bland, wet taste that is better used as a complement to other foods. You don't eat plain ketchup, do you? But tomato juice is expected to be drank by itself (or with vodka), so it's not going to taste good to most of us. This is why I don't like tomato soup either, though it seems to be an exception for a lot of you guys.

I like to take big chunks of cheese and stick them in the soup so they half melt and get all gooey. mmmmmm

Shred FTW.

Fresh ones can be very fragrant and have an incredibly strong flavor, almost unbearably so. Most supermarket tomatoes are really bad in comparison.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, the guy who described tomatoes as not really having flavor at all surprised the hell out of me. I occasionally have some success with the heirloom tomatoes - I've had enough of those that actually kinda tasted like an actual tomato that I think it's worth shelling out a couple extra bucks.

EDIT: Also, if I'm eating a tomato plain, I usually slice it and then put salt AND pepper on it. The pepper really adds, and with good tomatoes this is kickass.

My wife goes nuts for fresh vine tomatoes and farm fresh jersey tomatoes.

She will put some salt and pepper on a tomatoe and eat it just like an apple.

guids,

I guess I've never had a decent bloody mary then either, as I was unaware that you garnish them with salt. If you describe what is involved in making a good one, I'd be willing to give them a shot again.

i like all of those things too, well except ketchup, I'm not a big fan of that, but I do not like tomato juice. On its own anyway, I do like caesars on occaison (same as bloody mary?), which is weird.

a good one:

rub the rim with a lemon, salt like a margarita

add a bunch of ice (i like crushed personally)

bloody mary mix, I forget what everyone around here uses, its some british company, and it has a funny genitalia related name.

lots of vodka, salt, pepper, tobasco sauce, and some bbq seasoning, garnish with a bunch of olives or pickled green beans.
