Re: Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Even if TB's promising farm system pans out, those players wouldn't have that long together before the rich teams came along to pick them up. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Quote: Having a nice farm system is useless if you can't hold on to the players. False. [/ QUOTE ] Lets see how confusing we can make this thread. |

I don't know why I post. Maybe I'm just generous instead I should be reinforcing the misconceptions that are existent in sportsbetting. I'm giving my damn rice bowl away instead of just letting people take it.

Re: Tampa Bay Devil Rays
No need to be an [censored] about it. Explain your reasoning. I don't bet sports much, nor do I claim to be all-knowing. I'm genuinely interested to know why that's the answer.
Or just keep bashing, I guess. |

Or do you need factual evidence for the farm system comment. |

Re: Tampa Bay Devil Rays
I don't dispute either of those.
Let's assume that the TB farm system will eventually produce players that can challenge the larger-payroll teams. What happens, say, four years later, when those players' contracts expire? Won't TB be outbid in the free agent market by bigger clubs? Then they get set back again, and have to wait for the next crop of young players. (Will they be of the same caliber?) Meanwhile, CWS has a payroll above $100 million. When their older players leave, it frees up money to buy other ones. They will be able to get good players and keep them there longer than TB. A poster above cited the examples of Cleveland and Detroit, teams that went from being among the worst to being World Series contenders. Both of those teams did so only because they could buy/pay players TB never could. Sabathia, Sheffield, Ordonez, Pudge... TB will probably be better over the next 3 years. But over 10-12, by which time CWS will have had an opportunity to rebuild? I don't see why, but I'm listening. |

That's why I'm asking for someone to point out the flaw in my reasoning.
If the answer is so obvious that my request merits only smart-ass responses, I'll butt out. |

That's why I'm asking for someone to point out the flaw in my reasoning. [/ QUOTE ] The short version is this: You are wrong because you have no idea how contracts work in baseball and assume that players just leave after 1-2 years of making it in the big leagues because they get money from other teams. You don't understand service time clocks, you don't understand option years, you don't understand minor league contracts compared to big league contracts, you have no idea how the draft works. Since you don't know the basics of baseball, how can you expect anyone to actually spell out the more advanced stuff? |
