Re: Gus hansen and poker books
Just having heard the circuits interview on Gus Hansen, he commented directly about poker knowledge and books and reiterated his view that most books are overrated and outdated. I actually totally agree with this assessment.
In fact, let me take it one step further by saying that by knowing of the 'standard' knowledge in books, the smart poker player could theoretically use it as a 'tell' and do the things that will make you fold your hand as the book advises you to do. What's great about poker is that there are so many ways to play the game, it's endless. I do 100% agree that for newbie players it's good to read a few good books as a background to educate you about all the 'standard' knowledge in poker and take it from there. But if a player does not tweak his strategy and deviate from 'standard' play, I'm sure that he will be steamrolled down by the more creative/aggressive player. I highly recommend the Gus Hansen interview to everyone, especially in the last part where he analyzes a specific hand from WPT season 1 and says why he did it. |

Re: Gus hansen and poker books
[ QUOTE ]
Studying pokers tends to be a sufficient but not necessary condition in being successful at poker. Phil Ivey being the typical example of not studying books. However, players that do not study poker books tend not to be good general practitioners of poker. Successful players in this group tend to be specialists in a particular game or structure. Being good at cash games and bad at tournament play (and vice versa), for instance. A player may also be good at a particular game or structure partly because his/her personality fits well. [/ QUOTE ] I agree and what you say makes a lot of sense. Word is that Gus Hansen and Howard Lederer frequently talk about hands together and analyze them, often while working out. This was something somewhat recent (a few months ago) so it might not still be happening. |

Hellmuth is a fish in the high stakes UB cash games. Hansen is a fish in the high stakes bellagio cash games. Who cares about either of them? [/ QUOTE ] I know you are being sarcastic, but everyone is a fish in some game or another. |

Regarding the original point: Peter Jennings didn't finish high-school. Therefore if I hadn't finished high-school I would have been a successful network news-anchor. |
