Mucking hand at showdown, what is correct?
This past weekend we had a situation in our game. 2 players to the river and the player 1 bet and was called by player 2. Player 1 immediately mucked his cards but they did not hit the dead cards on the table. Player 1 asked player 2 what you have 2 pair. Player 2 refused to show his cards and player 1 was upset because no hand was shown to win the pot. Eventually he showed A high. Player 1 insisted that p2 had to show cards because p1 mucked his cards. Is there any type of ruling that says they have to show their cards because the other player mucked his cards. In my opinion the mucked hand is dead and he forfeited the hand, so it is over. Is that correct?

At showdown, the winning hand must be shown (hence the show part of showdown).
Any casino I've ever played at, that's been the rule.

Not every winning hand gets shown, not those that win uncontested.
It's rair at my low (live) limits for an uncontested hand, but it has happened, and after the pot is pushed my way I MUCK face down.

Cal./Northern Nevada the last player with cards wins, and in the case where no one else has cards then the winning hand may be mucked face down.

The ruling here will vary greatly by cardroom, dealer and floor. IMO if P2 mucked after calling he should not have the right to ask to see P1's cards, since his hand can no longer be shown (assuming dealer properly mucked his hand already). It gets fuzzier if another player not involved asks to see, invoking the terrible IWTSTH rule (i.e. The "I want to get free information" rule). I suppose that the dealer would have to turn it up but my stomach would be churning.

NEVER seen it happen any other way. In a called pot, the pot can only be pushed when someone tables their cards.

[/ QUOTE ] Whenever someone tells me this I always ask what happens to the pot if the remaining player with cards doesn't table his hand?
