My speculation...

Since Bill made the bet, it doesn't matter that much, but if he thought he had the straight I'd blame nervousness. The way he looked and said straight, I thought it was an honest error, and it was the best hand for about a minute.

I've goofed twice like that, and was very embarrassed.

Yes, I believe he really misread his hand. Apparently, Bill Smith was known to drink ALOT while playing.
