I will be traveling to Sweden and Denmark in August and want to play poker. I was wondering if any of you could share some information about where I should play and how I can make the most out of my experience. Any information about poker in Scandinavia would be very much appreciated. I plan on visiting Stockholm and Copenhagen. I could throw another city into my trip. In reality, any information that would be helpful for my trip would be appreciated.

AFAIK, there's only one casino in Stockholm (Casino Cosmopol) and I don't think they even have poker there = /
Denmark, I'm not too sure about. I know Casino Copenhagen offers an amazing ONE poker table, but I can't tell you about anything else in the area. If you can just "throw" another city into your trip, may I suggest Helsinki, Finland? The games are pretty soft at the Grand Casino as most players play a very tight, passive game. If you go in and play aggressive, you might be able to walk about with quite a bit of money. |

I'm surprised that there is not more live poker. So many great poker players are coming out of Sweden and Denmark; where were they playing? Were they all playing online only? Are the casinos elsewhere in Europe other than Monte Carlo? I will also be in Germany.

Sllap,
As far as I know there are quite a few casinos in Germany (Dortmund, Baden and probably most major cities), have no idea what games they offer though. Copenhagen has it's one casino, I've been told the waiting list is just scary. Stockholm, likewise, has one casino (government monopoly, no less!), same thing there, the wait is just forever! Few tables / games offered at all times seems to be std.. Names in first reply are accurate, google for details. Loads of private clubs with varying degrees of illegitimasy, from run of the mill (illegal) casinos, to private poker clubs offering tournaments only all over the Nordic countries, obviously. Kind of difficult to find most of them if you're only visiting, I would guess. Enjoy your trip! Slim |

AFAIK, there's only one casino in Stockholm (Casino Cosmopol) and I don't think they even have poker there [/ QUOTE ] Casino cosmopol in Stockholm has had a poker room for several years and recently expanded to 10 tables. http://www.casinocosmopol.se/stockholm-poker.asp The link is in Swedish but you'll understand the list of games they spread with min/max buyins. USD1 is approximately SEK6 Open from 6pm-5am. Tournaments tues, wed, thurs, sunday commencing at 6pm. Mainly NL Holdem (20/20, 50/50) and PL dealer's choice (50/50, 100/100, 200/200) although bigger games do run occasionally. Dealer's choice is mainly omaha. There's also LHE although I don't play it so can't comment on which games run. Rake is 5% with cap at SEK100 (high compared to US but not as high as Australia). There's also poker at casino cosmopol in Gothenburg and the casino in Helsinki. |

Nice, so Casino Cosmopol's cheapest NLHE game is about $3.50/$3.50 blinds and the cheapest limit game is about $8/$16? That's a little on the expensive side for me, but I would do it for the experience. How long of a wait is it usually for a table? Do they have good places to eat/drink while I wait? Also, are they welcoming of English only speakers? Thanks.

You're not gonna have any language problems in Sweden or Denmark. Pretty much everyone speaks English, unless they're senior citizens. Germany is another story though

Although the stakes are higher, the 20/20 NLHE plays like a typical 1/2 game in Vegas or AC. [ QUOTE ] How long of a wait is it usually for a table? You can ring the brush (08-781 88 05) to get on the list although you have to be there within 30 minutes after ringing. There are restaurants at the casino with decent food at OK prices. The poker room is on a separate floor and there's a bar/dining area in the poker room. No problems with language. There are even a few regulars who don't speak Swedish. |
