advice for leaving a job

Actually if your doing computer software your boss will be like "Here is your paycheck for 2 weeks of work, and this nice gentleman will escort you to the door." Every job i've quite in this industry almost never involved actually working the 2 weeks of notice.

If someone that was writing code for me gave their 2 weeks notice I would definitely want them gone asap I'd think. Seems like way to much risk to have someone that knows they're leaving doing something like that. Even if you know they have no malevolent intentions, just the fact that they're totally indifferent about whether or not they do a good job would scare me.

meh, numerous other programmers have left and they've all worked 2 weeks. we don't really have security or anything like that

This is wrong. Everything everyone does to a code base is documented and tied to them. There is almost no risk. I have worked in this industry my whole life, and I have never seen or made anyone leave on the spot who wasn't an asshat that was going to be fired anyway.

I think the risk is more like someone doing things carelessly since they are looking forward to time off or their new gig. It just seems like a really dangerous thing to have someone doing if they're not 1005 committed.

I'm leaving a job on monday. Mine is just a summer job, but they don't really know that i only view it as a summer job i guess. They know i'm going back to college, but they often keep people on the payroll and have them work sparingly. Not me. Any advice for this situation that's different from the OP?

My work is basically at a country club helping to run a camp for kids.

I'm a coder in the video game industry, so take this fwiw...

when i left my last job, I gave them almost a month's notice, and I tried to time it with a milestone so that I didn't leave any work unfinished that had been assigned to me. As it happened, I actually worked like a dog those last four weeks, but I finished all my [censored] before I left. As a result, I definitely didn't burn any bridges and I could use my old boss as a reference for sure. In all of the places that I've worked, when fellow coders leave (generally to go to other jobs in the industry) they generally give more than two weeks notice and there really are no hard feelings or mistrust for the last weeks that they are there. This industry is pretty small, though, so maybe it doesn't matter as much for other jobs.

should I be getting paid for unused vacation?
