I know a couple hedge fund managers that would probably hire me as an assistant trader, but never a clueless newbie.

I know a market maker that's looking to hire clueless newbies, but will pay them dog **** and they won't be traders, assistant or otherwise. They'll basically be assistant analysts and the only learning they might do about trading is watching the traders.

I know many people prefer to hire clueless newbies because their opinions and psychology hasn't yrt been muddled by all the BS they otherwise would have learned in their MBA/Finance classes.

I've never heard of anyone preferring to hire less experienced people outside of the movie Boiler Room. I've also never worked in trading, but this sounds like the sort of pitch you'd get from a firm right before they told you about the $10k check you were going to have to write them.

Funny because my mathematical finance professor expressed a mild preference for students with no work experience in the industry.

I know a guy at Bear Sterns who says certain units do in fact intentionally hire people with tangentially relevant skills but no finance or MBA experience, for exactly the reason stated: they want fresh perspectives and innovation, not some infinitesimal delta on the old orthodoxy. We're talking guys who are making a half a million bonuses and more.
