standard line with mid pair in loose game?
20-40 game that is avg to slightly loose.
EP limps, I raise 88 in MP, CO and Button both call. SB folds. BB calls. Flop 5BB: Kd 6d 4c BB bets (He's loose and will bet draws second pair etc. LP players are both loose as well). EP folds. I raise. LP players fold. BB Calls. Turn (2 players, 7 BB): 9s check, I bet, call. River: Q non diamond check, check. |

Re: standard line with mid pair in loose game?
If the game is a bit loose you might overlimp PF. I'll open 88 or raise a bunch of limpers, but after one limper you're assured of a 4-way pot or so, in which case limping 88 there is fine. I raise 99 though, so it's a blurry cutoff.

Re: standard line with mid pair in loose game?
thanks everyone. Sometimes do limp there which does probably cut down reverse implied odds and increase implied odds. Seems like a less stressful way to play 88 in a very loose game.

Turn (2 players, 7 BB): 9s check, I bet, call. River: Q non diamond check, check. [/ QUOTE ] Regarding the turn: Depends how aggressive EP is. I like your line against a passive player because he is unlikely to check raise and also less likely to bet the river if you check. Against an aggressive player I prefer to check the turn. You only want to invest one more bet to try to win this pot so you have to decide whether it will be on the turn or river. If you bet the turn and are check raised you may have to lay down the best hand as you don't want to put in an additional two bets to get to showdown. So against the aggressive player you check behind on the turn and hope to induce a bluff from him on the river. (Stox calls this the turn value check, p 155) Concerning preflop: I like the raise with 88 if there is a good chance you can isolate. In some games you can, in others it is almost impossible. 88 would like to either be heads up or have as many opponents as possible. So that's the decision to make. Sometimes against a loose raiser it is a good 3 bet because 3 bets drives out the field. But against a loose limper you sometimes have a table of loose players who are not slowed down by your raise in the least. What you don't want to have is a flop with 3 or 4 people because you are neither a favorite to win unimproved nor do you have good odds to make a set. |
