Oddly the Mountaineer poker room is expecting to open in August even though their county vote didn't happen until late June. It was on the local news but I can't find a local news article confirming it.

Wheeling Island's poker room is expected to open on Labor day.

I hadn't heard that Mountaineer poker would start in August - I figured it would be later than Wheeling because of the later vote. Do you have any idea when in August? Also, is there an article somewhere that talks about this? I went to Mountaineer's site just yesterday, and didn't see anything.

Wheeling Downs announced a planned Labor Day weekend target awhile ago; that should be easy to find. It's the August date for Mountaineer Racetrack (mentioned by sirfoldalot) that was the surprise in this thread. I just called Mountaineer to check the August opening rumor. Unfortunately, it doesn't pan out.

The gentleman from their gaming info dept. told me that they expect poker in the first week of October, that their vote was later than Wheeling, so they would naturally be opening later. This is what I would have expected. I told him about this discussion, and he said that he had heard nothing like this. He pointed out that they've just barely begun the construction for the poker room, so he doesn't see how August would be doable.

Searching doesn't turn up any info for August other than this thread (!).

Net/net, I'm inclined to believe that sirfoldalot may have misunderstood whatever news story that he heard. But I'd be happy to learn otherwise.

Anyway, it looks like Wheeling on Labor Day weekend, Mountaineer in early Oct. And that's good enough for me, and for the other long-suffering residents of this poker wasteland. The nearest poker room from Pittsburgh is about 200 miles away - in Salamanca, NY.

Friend of mine went to job interview this past weekend and the person interviewing him said poker room is supposed to be open for Laborday weekend.
