Default Re: Why don\'t PLO games run?

Has anyone tried to talk a poker room into spreading a half-NLHE, half-PLO table? What about picking a specific day and suggesting that they take a list in advance for something like a Wednesday PLO game?

the half and half has been spread periodically at Binions. Anyone can request to start a list for a new game. The brushes do a nice job announcing the interest lists and try to get the games going.

if you think random donkeys suck at unlimited bet hold them, check out a plo game sometime online. it's like a six-way contest to see who can outstupid everyone else.

people don't raise their standards for playing hands despite average hand strength increasing, they severely overvalue hands like bottom two pair on drawy boards and they never fold draws to 17th nut hands. make it nine-way (live play) instead of six- (online) and there is just a siphoning of money from bad to good with little rake for the house in the meanwhile.

I don't get it. LO8 games go- they can have 6+ running at HG. I'm most familiar with LA, but is there any room in the US that has a regularly running PLO game? Looking at PLO vs. NLHE traffic online it seems like the interest is there.

I would guess part of the reason casino's are less enthusiastic to spread them is that live the game is much slower (fewer hands/hr = less rake) and the dealers have a much tougher time dealing it and make more mistakes (lots of misread hands, exact count of pot, etc.).

Well, if they did a seat charge instead of rake that'd solve that.

Also, reading PLO high hands is pretty easy.

As far as pot counting. You're technically supposed to know the pot size at all times anyways--and it isn't really that hard.

It is probably a combination of all of the above: novices are intimidated by it, it is a bit slower, variance is high, etc.

FWIW, London was traditionally the place to go for PLO. In recent times it seems to be declining even there. The Vic now usually starts HE games before the Omaha game and on some nights it doesn't get going for a long time. When it does it looks like a stud game at Foxwoods. Almost everyone is over 40.
