For realz...it would be more surprising to me if the girl was speaking English to her parents imo. I know many people who aren't native speakers of English and almost none of them speak English as the primary language at home despite having been in America for 10+ years in many cases and being fluent at English.

In general, bi-lingual kids are going to eventually have much greater language skills that not. This is very much a plus for the kid.

If it is boggling your mind, you might be missing the point.

I saw a little 5 year old girl at lunch with her Hispanic parents and noticed she was speaking Spanish. Is this the norm? This seems like a disservice to the child IMO. Shouldn't the parents make English a priority for the kid? Why give her another barrier to overcome?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd be more pissed if my parents spoke the language and refused to teach me the language. (One of my friends is like this).

Her knowing two languages will be a huge advantage for later in life.

[/ QUOTE ]

Knowing Spanish + English = huge advantage? Over whom? The deaf?

[/ QUOTE ]

Are you serious? You have never thought that knowing an additional language would ever be useful to you in your lifetime?

Do you just hate information or what?

Give me a scenario where this girl will be at some mega-advantage with these worldly linguistic skills.

I know English and I know Spanish pretty well. I'm not going to be a U.N. translator but still. I can't think of many times when knowing Spanish has been useful at all. Assuming this girl is Spanish, so she probably grows up in a Spanish neighborhood. Knowing English is ldo and everyone she's around knows Spanish. And I'm sure these kids are just REAPING the advantages.
