I have run into browne at a tournament before, never played him, but he seemed like a huge prick.

He's more of a nervous wreck than a douchebag. Plus he gets into massive time pressure all the time.

Well, I think you may have come away with a false impression of Walter.
He was very energetic....a ton of nervous energy....with a huge ego who
didn't refrain from telling you exactly what he thought, or sugarcoat
his words in any way. So I can understand how you could come away with
a false impression.

Walter was a good guy. I liked him.

several american grandmasters have turned to poker in recent years, as there's not enough money to support all of them in the usa's tournament chess scene/circuit.

that trend is worldwide though and not just in the usa (chess--->poker).

i played alot with him some years back. he is a diiferent kind of guy and is hard to understand at times but that comes with being a genius. he plays very well and plays to win the money not for show. overall he is a good guy.
