Poker ethics question?
There are eight of us playing a $30 buyin texas holdem tournament. Four of us are left and I am the short stack, just a little below 10 times the BB. I am the small blind and delt AQ. The first to bet picks his hole cards up from the table and inadvertantly flashes the bottom card--a Jack. I am the only one at the table aware that the did this. He then raises the pot about three times the BB. The next player calls. It is up to me...
What would you do in the situation? I will tell you what I did after I see some responses. |

Re: Poker ethics question?
You are never required by any code of rules or ethics to disclose that someone is unintentionally exposing their hand. Furthermore, you are well within your rights to exploit this knowledge to your own advantage.
In this case the J seems like a pretty meaningless card, so I'd push whether or not I saw it. In fact, in this case you should be pushing AQ regardless of what the exposed card was. |

Agree that it is his problem and you should push it

Re: Poker ethics question?
Shove is exactly what I did. The results. The guy with the jack ended up folding. The guy who just called called my all in. He had pocket kings. I was knocked out. But I agree, it was the right move both in terms of the right play and ethically.

Re: Poker ethics question?
the player with KK saw your AQ and cold-called because he knew you were going to shove, and the player with JJ folded because he saw the other guys KK

Re: Poker ethics question?
That's sort of a weird question, I don't see what would be unethical about using the information that someone has a J in his hand for your advantage here.
If for some reason you had seen that the initial raiser has AA, would you still have pushed your AQ "because it's the right thing to do", or what? |
