As others have said, they can't survive three legged. They can't balance that way. Also, its impossible to tell a horse that they just have to stay still for 3 months.

Sometimes when they have breaks as babies, you can save them. However, Kylie's leg was broken in several places, and to immobilize it they would have had to put screws into her growth plate. It was also in such an area, that a cast of any sort would only come as high as the top break.

It was horrible. I can still see the xray when I close my eyes.

So sorry KK. That is terrible news. I get cut up when I hear about how horses have to be put down. Unfortunate thing about the way they're built I guess.

I did hear one story where they suspended a champion racehorse in a sling (basically off the ground) in order to try and heal a smashed fetlock but I have no idea if it worked and it doesn't seem fair for an animal to be basically "held against their will" when their instincts are trying to get them to walk and run.

So sorry again. All the best. [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Can anyone ballpark what % of horses have to be killed due to leg-related injuries. Like Daryn, I never really understood all this.
