I dont know about that. I dont see Casinos trying to outlaw online gambling. I see them trying to make it legal and regulated so that they can be incharge of it. I think I read a article about this a while back on how Casinos are ready to do it if it every comes to pass.

I hope that you're right.

In CA, there were clubs that were allowed to spread poker but not casino games.

IMHO a very interesting scenario would be that in a similar vein, online poker and sports betting could be made explicity legal, but that all games with a house incentive for the player to LOSE (i.e. blackjack, video poker, etc.) would be made illegal. The influx of players who have heretofore avoided the hoops of depositing money in overseas companies would LOVE to join "bellagiopoker.com" and deposit money reliably or even drop a few bills at the Bellagio casino cage for online play.

TwoplusTwo would be wise to take a more proactive role in generating action against this bill and others like it. One thread in one forum isn't enough. Here are some relevant websites.

List of all committe members in House committe on the Judiciary where the bill has been introduced:

http://judiciary.house.gov/CommitteeMembership.aspx

Where you can find the email address for each member of this committe. Just point to the state where the rep is from and find his district. You can use PPA's form or use your own.

http://capwiz.com/pokerplayersalliance/dbq/officials/

Page where the PPA has a generic letter for you to sign and will send it to your rep:

http://capwiz.com/pokerplayersallian...lertid=8522976

Tips on how to speak and/or write to members of congress:

http://capwiz.com/pokerplayersallian...cs/?style=comm

FYI, the bill is H.R. 4777.

I don't know the intracacies of politics but my take on this bill is that this is the last push by the opposition to outlaw our "sport" before the industry grows too powerful in Washington. If the industry can defeat this bill then I think the war will have been won and internet gaming will remain legal here in the states for the forseeable future. I urge everyone to help to make sure that happens. My advice is to write your rep and everyone in the committe today or tomorrow and again when the bill comes up in the committe for hearings.

And if you haven't already joined the PPA, I urge you to do so. $100 a year is a reasonable contribution, imo. PPA is not only trying to prevent the federal government from outlawing internet poker but they are also trying to make land poker univerasally legal.

Ironically enough, Goodlette is speaking to my college Republicans group in two weeks. I will speak to him then.

When you see him, could you ask him where he might stand on a prohibition on tobacco? If he's looking to protect children and families, shouldn't he be introducing legislation to prohibit something like tobacco growing (and manufacture, sale, etc.)? After all, minors buy tobacco and tobacco-related diseases harm families.

Oh, wait - in 2003, his home state of Virginia grew $90 million worth of tobacco, and it was the state's top export. I'm guessing, just guessing, that he wouldn't feel quite the same need to protect us from ourselves in this instance.

You really need to do whatever possible to get some decent arguments to this guy. If it means writing 2 paragraphs of very factual and concise arguments and literally shoving it in his face, do that. Sometimes these guys will meet with small groups of students, try to find out if that will be happening and grill him with questions.

Over the past years, my party under the Bush Administration has moved away from its central tenets of individualism, states' rights, and laissez-fairre government to instead pursue idealistic goals on moral grounds. This bill epitomizes my disgust. I urge all of you, espcially those who share my viewpoint, to write you congressman or woman and share your disgust.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not to get political, but this is exactly why Bush and his friends such as this bill's sponsor wil go down in history as some of the worst public servants ever. They forget what Republicanism means in an effort to appeal to certain interest groups. It's really, really sad. Thank goodness that voters are FINALLY starting to notice the pure insanity of the administration and many members of the Congress.

I guess 6 years late is better than never.

Funny stuff. You must be young. The Republican Party has been doing this for a long time now.

As an active, Republican, I could not be more disgusted with this bill. Over the past years, my party under the Bush Administration has moved away from its central tenets of individualism, states' rights, and laissez-fairre government to instead pursue idealistic goals on moral grounds.

I am an ex-republican. Hammer, you have been smoking crack if you are just realizing these 'erosions' of freedom. The US has gone overboard since 9/11 and it may not even be a party-line thing any more. The only hope for changing direction would be the democratic party and they are impotent, or unwilling, to challenge. Let's hope I'm wrong. Many people would say, "get out of the US while the gettin's good."

As far as the bill is concerned it will never pass. The PPA should help that by getting some involement by players against it.

He is not. He is my congressman and I sent a stern, but respectful letter. All I got back was a canned response that seemed like a cut and paste of the the website's bill statement, and a reminder that he would "keep my thoughts in consideration as this bill moves forward".
