[ QUOTE ]

I'm not trying to antagonize anyone, just pointing out that the vast majority of the posters on this site who are so quick to say that God doesn't exist, life is meaningless, etc. have not read any great theologians. How can you possibly have a meaningful discussion without being acquainted with more than one point of view?

[/ QUOTE ]

I am acquainted with viewpoints other than my own.
But I have not read any of the greats.

I'm sure that some of the stuff is interesting and perhaps I will get to it someday. But I'm still perfectly entitles to have an opinion even though I fully acknowledge it's a somewhat amateurish one.

99% of the world probably has not read the great theologians I'm guessing. Does that mean they shouldn't be allowed to reflect on their life and/or existence and have opinions about it? I think that's pretty elitest.

You might think I'm exaggerating in my example to make my point but I really don't think I am.
You very much seem to dismiss the perhaps less-expert viewpoint of somebody who hasn't read the greats.
I feel like perhaps the more untainted/unbiased viewpoints of such individuals should perhaps be considered more strongly actually.

UMMMM, how about 100% of the "great" theologians know less about science than a first year biology major, and THAT disqualifies them from having anything to say about what does and doesn't exist and where life comes from, etc.

Yeah, if a philosopher can't express his ideas clearly, then he is not worth reading.

I haven't read the thread but the title is enough:

1) Don't contemplate this stuff. It's the reason religion is as popular as it is.
2) You won't find an answer by thinking about it. And throughout history any "answer" that someone has found has either been something that can't be proven until dead or just silly.
3) Yes, number 1 above is hard to do when you are self-aware (a lot of times I wish I was that kid that no grasp of anything than the current moment)
4) If you live by some spimple rules (ie don't kill/rape/steal) you are likely going to do fine whatever the case may be
5) If you do end up thinking about this stuff (it's inevitable for someone with a reasonably imaginative mind as well as those who NEED answers) then write out some thoughts, read a book or two, but don't jump in too deep because in the end everything has seemed to be pointless
6) If you find you can't get your mind off of a topic, start focusing on something concrete (photography, sculpting, running, writing, comedy, movies). Anything to get yourself out of your own [censored] head.
