I'm glad I bought a replacement fish tank with a lid. The cats have been eyeballing Ghengis all day long.

I thought these fish really like small tanks because they're territorial and will continually swim around in a large tank.

I've had two different bettas (not simultaneously) that have survived for over a year in a 5 gallon tank with a bunch of tetra tankmates. The bettas were pretty active usually hung our near the surface and sometimes would swim through the tetras and everyone got along fine. The only time there were any problems was when I fed them and the tetras decided they didn't want to eat their flakes wanted to try the betta's blood worms. The betta would chase a tetra around for 10 seconds or so and that was the end of it.

I also know someone who keeps her betta in a crowded 10 gallon tank without problems.

I'm considering getting a Betta and having it inhabit an empty handle of Jack. Good idea?

Edit: Realized it might get stuck in the handle part. Maybe I'll find a handleless jug of something.

I was so glad to be going home. I remember those days when I sang and danced with my family on the porch of the old house. But things change and with all the additions to the family we had to tear down the old house, even though we loved it. But we built us a bigger one.

That's like half a gallon of water, seems kind of small, and how do you expect to change the water? Pour it out, fish and all?

Yeah, the opening on them should be big enough to get the fish, but a half gallon is small, you're right. I probably won't.

I've had these guys for a while and out of our small sample size of like 5, the ones we've had in the 5 gallon tanks have lived a decent amount longer. (1.5-2 years)

Could also be the addition of a filter though.

I'm thinking that it might be fun to create a sort of "betta bicycle" sort of thing for them to paddle around the house. It'd be interesting to see where they go of their own accord.

This is based off of the idea that they'll be totally fine breathing air for extended periods.
