Default golf clubs on amtrak?

Sorry for this low-content post (i'll be quick), but I am trying to plan a trip home for the 4th of July weekend. The DC to Newark leg of the trip, I'll be taking a train. I know you are technically allowed to take clubs on Amtrak, but I'm wary of doing it if it's a huge pain in the ass. Anyone have any experiences?

Also, I'm taking a horse and buggy this weekend to the city. I plan on bringing my clubs along, any advice?

Check to see if the Newark stop has baggage checking service. You have to carry everything on at some Amtrak stops and I doubt golf clubs would fly there.

Its been a long time since I have ridden amtrak but when I did they didn't really seem to care what we brought with us, we have several larges boxes of random crap and a large cooler, it isn't golf clubs but I would think it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

I've taken golf clubs on LIRR and NYC subways. Neither were as bad as I expected, and LIRR was pretty pleasant. I'd expect Amtrak to be fine unless you were taking one of the really heavy traffic commuter trains.

I used to travel between LA and Chicago for the summers and would take my clubs with my and try to Monday qualify for the Western if it was during my visit. A couple of items.

1. I always got a room, they are expensive and I could keep my clubs in the top bunk, plus 1st class gives you free meals.

2. They always try to put your clubs in the luggage rack and they are about as safe as letting everyone take their own luggage off the rack unsupervised.

3. Good luck, drive first, fly second, Amtrak last, and dont be in a hurry as they are often late.
