increasingly common spot in small stakes
when i started playing three years ago or so i remember somebody on this forum telling me not to three bet jj from the sb from an utg raise. a quite irrelevant start to my post except to show how much everything has changed. nowadays at small stakes there's obviously alot more three betting preflop so what is the standard play in this situation.
$100NL you raise from utg+1 (6max) with 99 (suits irrelevant) to $4 the button three bets to $14. back in the day you cud fold or call for set value, now i feel folding is way too weak so you call to play poker. flop comes 642 no fd, you check?, he bets $22, you? opponent is pretty aggro and can have virtually any two playable cards, but he's also smart enough to know you know that if you know what i mean. we've tangled a bit and he's seen me play draws strong as well as slow play some strong hands. what's the best play? ta for thoughts mustardo |

Re: increasingly common spot in small stakes
if he 3bets light then call atleast once. i dont mind bet/fold on the flop, even though alot of people here probably hate that coz it folds out worse hands and only better hands call.
i mix up 50% between i) check/calling and seeing how the hand develops ii) bet/folding the flop |

Re: increasingly common spot in small stakes
i hate b/f flop. you think hes folding TT? and if hes that aggro he might even push AK/AQ/A3/A5 which would really suck.
call flop, sometimes c/f turn sometimes ch/rai turn (if he the double barrelling type) someitmes call flop and turn not real specific, but you get the idea. calling at least one street is good. then call down, or ch/f, etc based on specific player tendencies |

Re: increasingly common spot in small stakes
yea. i understand why bet/folding is bad. lately ive been trying to "underrep" my hand to maximise value. but find that when OOP it leads to some really tricky spots. i think i just need to get better at handling those spots though.
sometimes i feel that i lose less when i define my hand. lately i check/call one street and check/fold two 2nd barrels or sometimes call depending on playe.r |

Re: increasingly common spot in small stakes
yeh i dont like bet folding either, if i bet it's to call a shove. my problem with check calling tho is how many cards are there that make me squirm on the turn? so even tho i think it's unlikely he'll call with worse on the flop how bad is the c/r ai on the flop just to close it down, given that i'm liable to be way ahead and there's alot in the pot already?

Re: increasingly common spot in small stakes
this depends on the player. most aren't agressive enough to 3bet less than TT+, AQ+ in the SB to a MP raise (TT many CC with), so I'd usually feel good c/folding or maybe floating once if he's not very agro (if he's tight preflop, but agressive postflop, i just c/fold the flop because he's likely to 2nd barrel and you have to fold..)
If he'll 3bet loosely in this situation, I'll be more inclined to either c/r or c/c. |

Re: increasingly common spot in small stakes
i do c/f, c/c, c/r (mostly as a bluff)... depends on how the button plays exactly
