Re: speak your mind on the internet gambling bill!
[ QUOTE ]
Here's the response I got back from my Rep. [ QUOTE ] February 21, 2006 [My address] Dear Mr. Z: Thank you for getting in touch with me to express your views regarding HR 4777, to expand and modernize the prohibition against interstate gambling, and for other purposes. I am currently not a cosponsor of this legislation. As a member of Congress, knowing your thoughts helps me to better represent all my fellow Tennesseans here in Washington. As the House of Representatives addresses a wide range of issues in the 109th Congress, I want to convey to you how much I appreciate your involvement and participation and I will certainly keep your sentiments in mind. In Congress, I work very hard to promote legislation and policies that will improve the quality of life for all Tennesseans as I support initiatives to help create jobs, improve educational opportunities for our children, and preserve the national security, health and well-being of all American citizens. I hope you will continue to contact me to express your views on the many issues facing our nation and the U.S. Congress. If you need additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me or my office. I look forward to hearing from you again in the future. Sincerely, Jim Cooper Member of Congress [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] typical i guess |

typical i guess [/ QUOTE ] I did get a typical 'thanks for your concern' (or some such) response initially. This one came a few days later. I'm happy that at least the actual bill was recognized in the response. |

Re: speak your mind on the internet gambling bill!
This is what I sent.
I always believe briefer is better. sorry, i noticed a couple typos...i have fixed them here [ QUOTE ] I am writing to urge you to oppose H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, introduced by Representative Bob Goodlatte, R-VA. This bill would make Barry Goldwater and Ronald Regan writhe in agony in their graves! As avid poker players, Richard Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower would be sick at legislation that tramples individual freedom as this bill does. . As an avid poker enthusiast, I feel strongly that poker is a truly American game of skill. Denying or even infringing on adults' right to play poker online would have our founding fathers revolting all over again! . Poker is not a passing fancy, and is predominately a skill game, like bridge and chess. We should be encouraging the the use of mathematics, psychology and strategy used in poker, not lumping it in with craps, slots and roulette! . Supporting total games of chance such as state lotteries and allowing online bets for horse races, while prohibiting games of skill like poker is not logical or ethical. . Ironically, Congress chastised China for forcing ISPs to regulate content that Chinese citizens could receive, yet they find it acceptable for the U.S. government to censor the Internet. I thought we were past 1984! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: speak your mind on the internet gambling bill!
Well I sent off my comments to Hal Rogers but considering I'm a liberal trapped in the conservative Bible Belt "W is God's right hand" state of Kentucky it probably won't do much good. I have little doubt he will vote for this bill and be proud he saved people from themselves.

[ QUOTE ] Word. I took a more direct approach, but stole your last paragraph. Dear Representative XXXXX, I am writing you in regard to H.R. 4777: The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act being introduced by Reps. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Rick Boucher (D-VA). I wish to inform you that I am STRONGLY OPPOSED to this bill and among my friends, family, and business associates, my view is not in the minority. We will be watching your vote on this matter closely as it will greatly influence our future votes in the 10th district. Please speak for the majority of the citizens in your district and vote against this bill. [/ QUOTE ] I just sent this. Thanks guys. [/ QUOTE ] Lol sounds like Tony Soprano wrote this. |
