I think you played it fine.

The problem with me and sets like this is I either win a little bit or lose a lot when I'm horribly beat. When I DO play it aggressively, I inevitably end up losing the maximum to a higher set, straight, flush, whatever. It doesn't happen too often that I crack top pair or an overpair. Or it is just me, for some reason?

pf is no big deal
flop is bad, raise flop
turn is bad, raise turn

Raise the flop. With the board being as coordinated as it is, UTG could easily be convinced to put a lot of money into the pot early with draws or made hands that you beat.

Since you didn't raise the flop, raise the turn.

My guess is it's you with a small sample size/selective memory. Since we are in position, and the board is drawy, we should be extra eager to get money in the pot early since it is more likely we are ahead (we only are behind 3 hands, all of which are relatively unlikely) before a card comes to scare the other guy into not betting anymore. Plus, when we're in position, we have the option of slowing down on later streets if the board gets really bad.

I would start by raising the flop. To me, though, not raising the turn was an even bigger mistake. Why are you assuming Villain has a flush?

Even if he has a flush on the turn, you have 10 outs for a full house or quads which will beat his flush. Raise the Turn.
