I used to be an ip relay operator. Also did STS (speech to speech for speech-disabled people).

Pattdown, which company did you work for? And where?

TigerMoth: I worked for what was at the time called GC Services in Riverbank, CA. Last I knew it changed ownership under MCI but it seemed like it was changing ownership every year. It is the largest relay center in CA.

When I worked there the building was split into two halfs, one half was the myiprelay side which was all prank calls. I luckily got onto the california relay side, where the users had to have a text telephone so basically no pranks. When iprelay was flooded and CA relay was slow I'd get sent to their side on occasion, it did suck.

The job deffinately made me hate deaf people, and people in general.

Wow, this seems insane to not report something like a bomb. Drug deals, yes I can see that, but bombs? I guess that's the way it has to be, huh?

what % do you estimate were crank calls? what % do you estimate were legitimate ones (where one person was deaf)? what % do you estimate involving activities that you could report to the police if you were allowed to?

I worked for GC Services in Wisconsin. "Hello, this is MCI Worldcom operator xxx..."

They paid well (pre-poker), but it was soul-sucking work...

Considered moving out to Riverbank for a management position, but Riverbank pretty much sucks.

Most of what we dealt with on the STS side was inmates calling their girlfriends from jail. The service was free, and we weren't "qualified" to determine whether someone had a speech disability, so there was nothing we could about it and the number got spread around the CA prison system like a bad rash. I spent about 8 hours a day listening to some guy who could barely speak have phone sex with his girlfriend.

Yeah the inmate calls, sigh. I will say I hated seeing a call drop in from Oakland, Inglewood, or Compton. Eugh, learn to speak English. I can't relay ebonics.

As to what percentage of calls were fake. On the CA Relay side where text telephones were used about 100% were real. On the iprelay internet side about 90% were cranks. As for what I could report, 0%.
