Default Planet Earth

Who's seen the BBC/Discovery HD series Planet Earth?

It sounds a bit tacky, and I was a bit skeptical at first, but one episode will blow you away.

The DVD package features 11 different 40-ish minute episodes categorized by biome, with sites around the world. The cinematography is absolutely mind-blowing and the narration isn't bad (the BBC narration is by the guy who plays Gandalf, the Discovery Channel one is done by Sigourney Weaver).

Here's the wikipedia link: Planet Earth

How many of you guys have seen the show? What are your personal thoughts on it?

I have my own thoughts but I think I'd like to save them for a bit.

I was skeptical when I first heard about it and missed the initial airs of the first two episodes but after a call from a friend stayed up late that night to check them and I stayed up till 3am watching it and was hooked after that. Everything is perfect about it from Sigourney Weaver's narration to the behind the scenes part of every episode. My personal favorites were Jungles (HD is a must) and Deserts ( Lions FTW). If you haven't checked out Planet Earth, BUY THE DVD's

This show was mindblowing at times, absolutely loved it and the David Attenborough version of the DVDs is currently on its way to my house.

BTW, David Attenborough is not Ian McKellen

there is a couple of really long threads that are out there that attest to its awesomeness. I bought a 56in lcd to get hi-def, so I could watch it right.

I might buy these. Anyone know which narration is better? Are they exactly the same except for the speaker, or are the scripts different as well?

It really is incredible. Normally I'm not one way interested in the technical side of making movies/documentaries, but nearly every shot in this had me in awe. And guids is right, definitely watch it big.

As for the narrator, I don't know if the scripts are different at all, but the awesomeness of Attenbourogh just push you that way, but I'm a sucker for the accent.

The helicopter shot of Angel Falls at the beginning of the "Fresh Water" episode is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. It's an awesome series.

[/ QUOTE ]I think the BBC episodes are longer, on the BBC DVDs they are a full 1 hour each. The US episodes, at least as they aired on TV, were in 1 hour timeslots making them ~40 minutes long without commercials.

The whole series is incredible. HD is a must. It's amazing some of the shots that they got in this, like nothing you have ever seen before!
