Mmmmmm...beignets at Cafe du Monde.
An absolute must stop in the quarter, for me anyway. |

I've stayed at the W, Wyndham, Hilton, and Doubletree--all very near Harrah's and all pre-Katrina. I'd rank them in the order listed. I will not return to Doubletree, but perhaps my bad experience there was an isolated one.
It is a real haul from the airport to downtown. I don't even like to drive that far on vacation I'd be shocked if the cab fare were only $25 as someone suggested above. |

Queen & Crescent Hotel
$80 for the night you are there on their site and $56.50 via TravelAxe. Looks nice enough from the websight and only .32 miles from the Aquarium of the Americas which if I remember right is further than Harrahs. I stayed at this Place a few years back and it was a very nice hotel and only a couple of blocks from Harrahs. It more expensive though at about $130. Renissance Arts Hotel The airport is quite a ways from Harrahs. Have Fun! |

It's about 4-5 blocks from Harrah's (away from Canal St). It was nice. But I'd prefer not to have to make that walk at night with $ in my pocket. |

i live here, and play a couple times a week. most of the time the games spread are:
Limit 3-6 No Limit 1-2 No Limit 2-5 Omaha/Hold 'Em 4-8 Omaha 5-10 it's a nice room, no smoking, but there aren't really any comps for poker players, just parking validation. on mondays they run an aces cracked promotion from 2pm - 10pm. there is also a bad beat jackpot. it's currently up to about $40,000 in hold 'em, but hit recently in omaha. i think omaha is aobut $5k right now? also, it's a timed rake on nl: $6 every 30 minutes. not bad if you're getting a lot of hands in, but there are a lot of wsop wannabes that think and think and think to make a $25 bet. |

have done the bourbon to decantur area of the quarter before. [/ QUOTE ] I feel a bit better about it then. Carry on. The fact that you didn't know that the airport is about a zillion miles away led me to conclude you had never done New Orleans before. Okay okay, so it's not really a zillion miles. But it is definitely a haul and like the other poster suggested I think $25 cab-fare 1-way might be a tad optimistic for that drive. Finally, if I were low on funds and on a budget then I think I would be more inclined to take part in cheap fun on Bourbon Street and be less interested in risking my precious little remaining dough playing poker. Obviously you don't exactly need to be ballin' it up to have a good time in New Orleans. It's pretty much made for the cheapest of the cheap for fun and entertainment. Reminds me of a couple of Mardi Gras I had gone to where I had barely enough to make it down there and back with a few drinks in-between. Didn't even have enough to get a room. |

driving in again, this will be my first flight out of there, and i found one $210 cheaper than previously expected so i spent a bit on a room on st charles @ the columns hotel and plan on cabbing / street carring for the day. ha, omaha and nl sound fun. My coworker tells me to avoid the quarter as essence is not the time to be there, and that the bar is nice at collumns.
ill probably have dinner at ONE (the uptown place) . it has been told to me that a cab to the airport is 25 ish from just about anywhere in the city so i think that is correct. thanks for the response fishwhenican, i remember meeting you at IP a year or two ago, i still have some(probably worthless) comp dollars from that hole in the wall as i dont think i ever went back thanks all for the responses very helpful especially knowing about the festivities in town at the time. If anyone is at harrahs's or any where ill be the strawberry blonde 6'1" goateed white guy in a UVA or Sam light baseball cap. jason |
