Re: table talk
[ QUOTE ]
The side betting to gain knowledge is a bunch of crap. [/ QUOTE ] That reminds me of something one guy likes to do at one of my games. He'll fold to a big bet, but offer to pay $1 to see the hand. I stonedly agreed to this once, then realized never again. I like when others fall for it, tho'. Someone else in that group has gotten a bit craftier, and instead says, "I'll fold now, but bet $5 on the side." I do, however, do little bets with my partner when we've both folded. Sometimes we're even betting each other's hand, as in, "I bet your trash is better than my trash." |

Re: table talk
This side betting reminds me of a nickel-dime-quarter game I played in in college. We'd play 'guts', and before the drop, one player might offer to bet a nickel on the low... as in, I bet I've got the worst hand at the table (or worse than another player who had groaned at the quality of his cards). Usually this was a sincere offer, and if taken up, the players would compare after the drop and settle up. Occasionally, however, it was used for deception purposes when holding a very good hand to get another player to stay in against you. "Just kidding, I've got 3 jacks. I lose the 5-cent side bet, but drag the $7 pot."
This was considered a perfectly valid 'bluff' in this game. - Teo |

Re: table talk
there is a very easy solution to this, if you consider it a problem. whenever you call out your hand, call it out truthfully, and whenever you are sure you have a losing hand and your opponent says he has a hand, make him turn it over.
this will ensure you always win when you get called out on it, and you have the best shot at winning with a losing hand. ps, this is the dumbest home game rule ever. |

Re: table talk
I allow players to talk about their hand all they want, and other people's hands even if they aren't in the pot. If one of the players in the hand asks for silence you must abide.
This works well for us. |
