Fact is that it's highly unlikely that we will ever know exactly why Benoit did this (if he did do it).

Benoit has been quite obviously jacked on anabolic steroids for the past 10 years. Side effects do include increased aggressiveness, which in sports is generally considered to be a Good Thing, and there are numerous anecdotal incidents of violence perpetrated by individuals who were taking anabolics, but it is difficult to separate the effects of steroid use from the tendency of some muscle-heads to just generally be violent jerks in the first place.
