Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] All, Everyone tips the cocktail waitresses $5 per drink, though, right? [/ QUOTE ] $5 is a bargain when coming from a country where the law prohibits the casinos to give out free drinks and instead charge market price (some $10). I'd tip $5 for the first couple of drinks, and $3 for the next ten or so if I'm on heavy drinking duty. [/ QUOTE ] easily the worst thing about many (all?) Euro casinos is lack of free booze. and like you said it's often expensive. |

Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
[ QUOTE ]
All, Today a friend ordered pizza, gave him a tip of a few dollars where one of the dollar bills was a $10 by accident. The pizza guy came back and knocked on the door, told him he accidentally gave him $10 extra. I don't know if he had him keep the $10 or gave him a $5 or what. [/ QUOTE ] switch the one with a ten and a 100 for the ten and i ve been on the receiving end of this in a bar i worked at, but they were good regulars so i gave it back next time they came in, if they had been shitt y tippers probably not. had a guy pull out about 600 in 20's, 50's to pay a $150 bill tip me nicely and leave the rest on the counter, chased him out to give it back and he tipped ten bucks a drink for like two months after that. Super rich nice guy has lunch the other day in the wine shop i work at 57.99 was the total, as he is ordering cases of nuits st georges, tante berthe etc he hands me a twenty and says keep the change? i looked puzzled and before i say anything he see's it a twenty not a 100 and hands me 4 more twenties, i have gotten a fair amount of similar tips, so dont be afraid you are tipping too much it nevers hurts to be sure second most everything shaniac has said 20% is a min for decent service for me(and no service person i know would be unhappy with 20 % either) and good service always gets more. want my last check to bounce too. another favorite was the "do you sell smokes here?" me "no sir" him "damn i 'll give you twenty bucks for a pack of X five minutes later "all i got are fifties thanks for the favor keep it" |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] 10% is standrd in uk. as a waiter a few years ago some douche tipped me about .005% [5p]which sucked and even handed it to me as if i should be grateful so i just put it back on his table... at 30% shaniac would have been my biggest tip! [/ QUOTE ] 10% is standard, which is lower than the USA, but higher than many other European countries. The Dutch, for example, just add a few coins. Of course, most of those places seem to be able to manage to pay their staff a decent living wage without their having to rely upon tips -- which I'd much prefer. A gratuity should be precisely that -- something that you give to somebody to reward them for services over and above the bare minimum. I remember talking to some women in NY one night. They'd been out to eat in one of those Italian restaurants in Little Italy, where the waiters are all greasy old Italian men. Throughout the course of the evening, they'd been patronized and insulted by the waiters, who implied that they were [censored], that they were lesbians, etc. etc. etc. When I asked them whether they had withheld the tip, they were really shocked. The idea simply hadn't occurred to them, but even if it had, they said that they wouldn't have done it for fear of being confronted by the waiters about being cheap. I find this attitude completely bizzare. These [censored] completely ruined their evening. I would have been refusing to pay for the meal, never mind withholding a tip. [/ QUOTE ] in france no one tips-its inclusive everywhere |

Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
[ QUOTE ]
wow these are huge tips you guys are talking about...I always thought standard tip was 15% for a cab ride? [/ QUOTE ] I'm in agreement here w/ the 15% for taxi rides, unless it is like a $100 car ride in which case I'll tip a 20. It also all depends on how cordial the driver is, how clean the cab is, did he offer to carry your stuff if you have any. On to restaurants and bars, I'll tip a minimum of 20% for good solid service, and most of the time more. For absolute [censored] service I will leave 15%. I will tip bartenders anywhere from 20-25% and in some instances 30%. They remember this and the next time you go to the bar, chances are they will take care of a number of rounds for you and provide with speedy service and drinks that are stronger. |

Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
Vegas taxis are good for a couple of things : as pimps and when transporting large groups in a minivan. But I'm not taking them. Here's why ...
In the early 90's, I was a degen. Staying most of every summer at the Gold Coast as they had free child care for my young child. And Steve Murphy was very liberal with the comps. One trip my old beemer threw a rod right at the summit on the California side. Somehow, I managed to coast all the way down to Stateline, belching black smoke until the car found its final resting place, right at that service station outside the Primadonna. We ended up leaving the car there to be towed in the next day, and some kind souls allowed us to board the casino staff bus along with the swing shift workers going back to Las Vegas. We were dropped off at the Trop and we climbed into a cab that dropped us off at the Gold Coast, the driver conveniently forgetting to drop the flag. Whatever the fare was, we were grossly overcharged by the white American driver. After contacting the police bunco squad, I was able to pick out his picture but never heard of any further developments. The few Las Vegas taxi rides I have taken since have not altered my opinion of their breed : they are degens non pareil. |

Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?
A Slovenian (Europe) view
Here waiters etc. arent allways tipped meaning it isnt presumed they'll get a tip. He works for a wage not a tip. If you go out for a drink, you usually dont tip him/her. If you go out for a dinner and service is good you tip them if you're not a nit. However its not even close to 30%..more like 10%. If you get an attitude or slow service you pay the bill and leave. As for tipping cabbies...this is almost unheard of. They take you from place A to place B and charge you accordingly. What is there to tip? |
