The problem with Sklansky books
If I could narrow it down to one thing, I'd say it's the fact that he tries to be correct, rather than trying to teach you to play poker. You can't really say there's anything "incorrect" about it, and that's what he seems to take pride in. The problem is when you're done reading, you can't really go to a casino and have confidence that you know how to play (because you probably don't know how.) NLHTAP is a good example. Contrast that with HOH, SSH, or ITH.

That's a problem with the way you read his books, DUCY?

Re: The problem with Sklansky books
I think it's by design that Sklansky doesn't give cookbook, practical guides to beating the games. His philosophy seems to be, "teach a man to fish and he'll never be hungry again". It's a little harder to learn this way, but the dividends are greater.
Personally, I loved having the HoH style books that got me started hitting the ground running, but Sklansky's stuff had a deeper, more lasting effect on my game. |

Re: The problem with Sklansky books
I agree with OP because I'm also too thick to understand Sklansky and feel kinda bad about it.
Little Green Book rocks my world though. (I'm series). |
