Default Table slapping

I have almost no live poker experience, except for what I see on TV. I'll notice sometimes that after a hand is completed, a player (usually the loser, but sometimes the winner) will slap or knock the table. What does this mean?

It's an understated gesture of respect. Eddie Felson does it with his pool cue in The Hustler, too. When a player wins the pot and does this, it's usually to acknowledge that the other player had a good hand also, or played the hand well.

You mean like just slapping the table with the palm a couple of times? If so, when I win a pot that I wasn't sure I was gonna win, it's just a sigh of relief.
