Re: New AFI 100 (best American films)
[ QUOTE ]
Great list, and I really can't argue with any film being on it except one, glaring mistake: Titanic??? WTF? How in the world did this film make any best of list? Replace it with any other James Cameron film and I'm fine. Bad, bad movie. [/ QUOTE ] Disagree again. I am often a cynic when it comes to love stories and whatnot, but Titanic is a fantastic movie. I compare it to "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" by Bob Seger... it's been overplayed and hyped so much that it loses its luster somewhat, but it's still a really great song. |

Two movies that I would add to the list are Lonestar and Hoop Dreams. Maybe documentaries were purposefully excluded. [/ QUOTE ] Well, Lone Star is not a documentary, but it definitely deserves a little more love than it generally gets, because it's a really fine film. I have very little patience for these things, generally. I mean, you can justify the omission of Blue Velvet and Fargo? What about Fight Club? If you're going to include The General and Tootsie and Toy Story and whatnot, go ahead and explain not including any of the three I mention here. Go ahead. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] "The Sixth Sense" - really? Top 100 all-time? [/ QUOTE ] clearly originality is weighted really, really highly [/ QUOTE ] I suppose this is how Blade Runner got on the list... Awesome visual effects but.. I mean.. I thought the plot was kind of all over the place and left out tons of information. [/ QUOTE ] wow....the Blade Runner plot is among the most meaningful and intricate ones in movie history... |

Well, I'm OK with Blue Velvet not being listed because it didn't make any [censored] sense at all.

[/ QUOTE ] I think Blue Velvet is a very polarizing movie, but I was blown away the first time I saw it. Fargo might have been on the first list because it was pretty new at the time and fresh in the voter's minds. Another reason it could have fallen off is that a lot of voters might have included one Coen bros. film on their list, but the votes were probably split. As for Fight Club, not sure if it would be on my list, but I think the average age of the voters is high enough that many of them haven't seen or don't relate to it. And yeah, obviously Lone Star is not a documentary. I should have worded my post more carefully. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] And I am never going to take this list seriously until Pulp Fiction is on it. [/ QUOTE ] Check out #94. [/ QUOTE ] Well, much higher then. Pulp is definitely one of the most influential and "groundbreaking" movies ever. By the way, it's "Brant." [/ QUOTE ] I agree about Pulp Fiction...and my real name is Brent...had the name "Brent" before the Brandt avatar. EDIT: Christ, I finally gave in and went to try and change my name to "Brandt" and be in full character - only to discover someone has already taken this name. |

Fight Club? Now there's a movie that doesn't belong in that list.
Tootsie and Toy Story are both tremendous films. |

The film has aged wonderfully and its black humor is probably more common now than when it was released. If you like epic action movies, check ou "The Wild Bunch." |
