Re: New AFI 100 (best American films)
[ QUOTE ]
The whole point of cinema is to be emotionally manipulated; manipulated into caring about people that don't actually exist. [/ QUOTE ] there's a difference between emotional manipulation and a good story. I mean c'mon, who didn't know that the young pussy translator was going to play a big role in the ending? I hate people who try to figure out the ends of movies, but this was one instance where I just threw up my hands. I am a Spielberg hater generally, but Jaws is a terrific film. |

Re: New AFI 100 (best American films)
[ QUOTE ]
[censored] all you SPR haters. It was a great movie. Is it really so fashionable to hate on films that made a lot of money? SPR, Forrest Gump, Titanic, Sixth Sense, etc. The haters are always out in force when these films come up. [/ QUOTE ] If an unkown actor giving the same performance and an unkown director doing just as good a job were responsible for this film instead of Hanks and Spielberg, do you think it would be on this list, or even remembered at all? I don't even remember SPR as being a hugely successful film financially, nor do I care about that. It's just that after the first half hour, nothing really surprising or interesting happens the rest of the movie. If you want to reward purely technical achievement in film (the first 1/2 hr of SPR is amazing of course) then put Russian Ark on the list, which has basically no story at all. Why not Boogie Nights, or Raising Arizona, or Amadeus...I could name hundreds of movies better than SPR. (BTW, I love Spielberg and think he deserves to be on this list with JAWS, ET, Schindler's, Close Encounters. I'm not a hater.) |

Re: New AFI 100 (best American films)
or put koyaanisqatsi on the list, which was as ground-breaking as any of these other movies being cited for 'innovation alone', but is way too obscure to make it on to something like this.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] It's not best KB4Z, it's greatest. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure what the difference is. and neither does econophile I guess. [ QUOTE ] Re: New AFI 100 (best American films) [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] Well, I could very well be wrong, but I've always taken "greatest" to connote cultural importance, cinematic influence, etc., while "best" chiefly refers to pure quality. I think this partly explains why 1930s-1950s films dominate these lists. [/ QUOTE ] This has to be the explanation, because there's no way that Citizen Kane is the 'best' movie ever. Most groundbreaking or whatever, but far from best. The best movies being made today better than just about anything from the old days, IMO. And I am never going to take this list seriously until Pulp Fiction is on it. |

Re: New AFI 100 (best American films)
Were Newton's Laws and Einstein's Theory of Relativity the Best physics theories ever, or are any works that build on them automatically better? I think it's kind of like that. But also, a lot of the movies from the old days are better than you think. I would personally rate Casablanca best of all time. |

Re: New AFI 100 (best American films)
Drew- I agree that there are probably too many old movies on this list, but the GREAT movies from the golden age..C KANE, Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, etc. are better movies than anything I've seen in the last 20 years. I think Casablanca is probably the best movie ever made and it will be tough for anyone to ever top it.
