June 21, 2007 a trait of a great player...

When I accessing a new player I look at how they call. Most player use the logic "I have a full house I call" without accessing what they beat while truly great players call can fold the second nuts and call with the second nut low. I get very scared when I play an opponent who is capable of making huge law downs and big calls.

An example of this would be if you were playing someone HU and raised preflop. The flop came down Kh Qh 2c you hold A8o and bet the pot and are called. The turn brings the 5 of clubs and your opponent checks and you check. The river brings another five and your opponent bets pot. Many players would say I have ace high I fold and if they held QJo instead they might say I have middle pair I call. But the best players realize that these two hands have the same value on the river as an opponent value betting a queen is unlikely. I feel mediocre players would be more likely to call with the queen and top players would call equally with both hands. This is one of the little things that I look for when I am up against a new opponent, and to be honest very very few players call with QJ as often at A8 in that scenario, probably myself included, but the truly great ones call equally with both hands.

Yesterday I go knocked out in the first round of the 5K HU event when my straight flush draw ran into my opponent's nut flush draw. They guy was really nice until he won when he proceeded to jump up and start screaming how he took down a professional poker player etc. etc. It was really funny to watch this 40 year old man act like he was five. A bunch of other players were around, Dustin Dirksen, Matt Hazards and they got a great laugh out of it. Also I thought I was playing Annie Duke in the first round and Taylor and Andrew were telling me how much [censored] they would give me if I lost to her. Luckily I didn't draw her but she was at the next table with Justin Bonomo and she beat him so if you see him needle him a bit about it.

Tonight was a good night. I won about 100K in PLO and about 50K in NLH. I also put the worst beat I have ever put on someone. It was so brutal and I genuinely feel bad because David has been running badly of late and this beat sure didn't help, anyways enjoy.

* on the flop I will win 3% of the time, which is better than I thought because I actually had two runner runners to make a straight, the JT and the 24, still very gross.

That is the worst beat he has ever put on somebody? Not to question one of the greatest players around right now but I got a guy better than that Tuesday night in my buddies home game.

QJ still has a little more equity because of small pocket pairs that are making bluffs. No?

yea, a little but hands where all draws miss...A high has almost as much value as 2nd or 3rd pair vs alot of players.
